Why is my computer running so slow after installing Windows Service Pack 2?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 that i recieved in 2004 for school. I can't afford virus protectors. I use Adaware and AVG free but spyware has still crept into my pc. So for like the 100th time i installed Windows service pack 2. So after that it took forever for my opening desktop to open. I noticed that it blocked bad things about to enter my computer which was fine. but now it takes forever to..well...do ANYTHING. it takes like 30 minutes for my internet to start up of for my aim to load or anything.

I am not a computer person. so what is going on?

am i better off just uninstalling it and living with the spyware and virus prone pc, or just wait this out with SP2? and if i do stay with SP2...what can i do to speed things up? or is there no use?

(note...it took me 35 minutes just to write this!!!!!)

Sounds to me like it was a combination of 2 things that were wrong...

1. You are already infected with viruses and spyware...

2. Because of the above stated, you got a bad install of SP2.

So, Uninstall SP2 then clean you computer of all the bad stuff that's on it...then reinstall SP2...

Installing SP2 shouldn't effect the performance of you PC at all...
