Trillian works for me, I've used it for 4 years on W98SE, W2k, and XP. No spyware, runs all the protocols from ICQ, IRC, Yahoo, AOL, and MSN - I've tried all protocols except for ICQ. I highly recommend it, plus you can set little icons for folks for easy reminders - just be careful they don't see your representations of them. :)
